The Blair Witch project really pioneered the viral marketing campaign by using a series of social web sites and message board posts to create a massive media buzz.
Fake newspaper clippings, photos of main characters missing cars and reports of their untraceable absence had pockets of the public wondering if it was all fact or fiction.
The horror flick went on to pull in $248 million at the box office, making it one of the most successful independent films of all time.
