Christmas Is Moving Online. Are You Ready?

It’ s gonna be a big online Christmas this year, starting with Tuesday’s ClickFest and continuing over the rest of the festive period as Aussies take to their mobile devices like never before.

Research out from Google today shows a whopping 20% increase in shopping related searches and 40% of all shopping searches now coming from smartphones and tablets.

"What we see is we're getting a growth of 20%, year on year, for shopping related searches and mobile devices searches have more than doubled in the last 12 months," says Google Australia’s Ross McDonald.

“The last three years the highest number of searches we've had on mobiles have been in the week before Christmas and we estimate that in the week before Christmas this year we will get 50 per cent of our queries through mobile devices.”

The huge growth in small screen shopping will really ramp up next week with retailers around the country lining up to join Australia’s biggest online shopping sale when Click Frenzy clicks off on Tuesday.

The event is expected to draw 1 million shoppers and generate over $10 million in sales as around 150 retailers slash their online prices by between 15% and 90% for 24 hours from 7pm on Tuesday next week.

The US equivalent, Cyber Monday, attracted 10 million shoppers who spent $1.22 billion last year.

And with the sale exclusively online, the blockbuster sale will really set the tone for an online Christmas.

According to Google’s research, 2 in 3 customers say mobile friendly sites make them more likely to buy or use a good or service, while every second customer says that a bad mobile experience makes them less likely to buy from a company.

That’s even if the final purchase is made at an online store or brick and mortar shop too, with consumers often moving between screens as they research their purchases and then going on to make their final purchase in a physical store or on a desktop computer.

Whichever way you look at it, your store needs to have a mobile friendly shop front to ensure a Merry Christmas.
